Blue-Bird taxi driver

Tinam, Mita, Pintor and me, Klinik Baruna, Jakarta, 30 Oct 2016

We, Pintor, Tinam and I chatted together in the co-ass residents room of the Obs-Gyn Department, FKUI RSCM (Dec 1974)

"Nam, does Blue Bird still need taxi drivers?"

"Yes. Who wants to work?"
"It's me"

"Ah, that's right... OK, if you want it, you need to have a General A driving licence (SIM). Later, when you have a SIM, let me know."

I knew it from Gilbert Supartono Sinay, now a neurologist and current Air Force Major, who already drove as a Blue Bird taxi driver. I quickly got an A-General SIM, because of connections from Cinga (cicik tengah) drg. Cathrien Indradjaja, who worked at Komdak-VII.

My Obs-Gyn Department was the last co-assistant residency before I became a medical doctor, 26 December 1973. I asked Tinam, Purnomo Prawiro, director of Blue Bird.

"Pet, come to the BB (Blue-Bird) office, to be tested at 10 am."

I came to the BB office, on Jl. HOS Cokroaminoto. Finally, after waiting for more than 4 hours, at 2 pm, Mrs. Djoko came out with a male employee to meet me. Mrs. Djoko said:

"Let's test drive."

I drove a BB taxi, accompanied by a male employee and Mrs. Djoko sat in the back.
Hooray, I passed this driving test conducted by the CEO of Blue-Bird herself !

"When do you want to work?

"As soon as possible, ma'am." , I said glowing gratefully.

"Okay. Tomorrow morning you go to jl. Angkasa, near Kemayoran. Bring this letter."

The next day for three months, from December 1973 to February 1974, I became a Blue Bird Taxi driver.  Blue sky Holden car. I worked from 8 am in the morning up to 10 pm. Because of my enthusiasm, I often asked to work five days a week. I just realized that waiting for 4 hours was a test of patience that a taxi driver must have. I often have to wait a long time when picking up customers. Thank you, Mrs. Djoko.

While driving as a taxi-driver, I met Anjar Asmara (soccer player), tourists from various countries, office workers and several doctors, my teaachers...

Becoming a Blue Bird taxi driver was truly a meaningful and unforgettable experience for me.

Ompung-Manis always accompanies me

Untunglah si-embok kesayangan
mengendong, dan memeluki saya terus. :
" Jangan Nyonya-muda, jangan Nyonya-muda, jangan......"
timbul api besar sekali. Untung saya masih bisa membuka pintu yang
tertutup sendiri dan mata menjadi 'buta' silau. Setelah diluar baru
Saya panggil sayang-sayang Ompung-Manis kepada-NYA.

I was born in Lahat, South Sumatra, 1949. The Dutch army had left,
but the Republic army had not yet entered. Lahat became a no man's land.
Engkong Hong Tjiang deliberately cleaned the only firearm, a pistol,
which he obtained while working at the Buki Asam Coal Company,
Tanjung Enim, in front of the house, so that people would see. However,
we were all afraid, because every day, we received news of kidnappings and so on.

A brief summary of my life that was always helped by Ompung-Manis:
Early in 1951, I was taken to Jakarta by ship via Palembang.
At that time I was over 1 year old. They wanted to throw me into the Java Sea.
At that time, on the way from Palembang to Jakarta, I was fussy and
cried continuously because I had many boils on my head. My mother was
pregnant at that time, and couldn't bear to hear it.
Luckily my beloved Mbok carried me and hugged me continuously.
"Don't, young lady, don't, don't...."
I got this story from my mother's younger sisters, Auntie Ting.
I was pushed into a new septic tank full of water by my peers.
At that time I drowned, and everyone ran away crying in fear,
while screaming: "Si Emping, si Emping.." Luckily there was Mr. Achmad,
a bricklayer. He lifted me from the tank, before my mother came to help.
During the FKUI mapram. Helped by Sujoko Prajitno Tedjowinoto,
now a famous surgeon in Jakarta.
While in Manado, my wife and I were able to raise children in a simple
life, planting cassava, corn, bananas, mangoes and durians.
Raising chickens, rabbits and pigs. Riding a wooden ship from
Manado-Tahuna, with over-flow passengers twice the ship's capacity.
Thank goodness there was no danger of a hurricane.

and especially the last two:
2009: a fire at the Boundary house. I went in to put out the fire with
a wet towel, the fire got smaller, but there was still a little. Back
again with a wet towel, then the fire caught the clothes in the closet,
then a huge fire broke out. Luckily I was still able to open the door
that had closed by itself and my eyes became 'blind' from the glare.
After going outside, I was really surprised that there was
a fireplace next door that didn't explode.

2020: Yokohama, while waiting in Diamond Princess cruise for quarantine,
I fell very-sick. The illness was so severe that I died, as the doctor said
and from the laboratory results.

It all happened because the Lord JESUS is alive, and always
accompanies me.
I call Him Ompung-Manis, my dearest love.
